Svitzer chief executive Henriette Thygesen has been appointed the new chairman of the board of directors of Maersk Supply Service, taking over the reins from current chairman and vice chief executive of AP Moller-Maersk Claus V Hemmingsen starting 1 June.
Ms Thygesen, who has been the chief executive of Svitzer since September 2016, is also chairman of Damco Forwarding and a member of the board of directors at engineering consulting firm COWI. Svitzer is the tug operating arm of AP Moller-Maersk and Damco Forwarding is also owned by AP Moller-Maersk, operating as a separate freight forwarding company.
“With Henriette’s experience, I am convinced she will be a strong chairman for Maersk Supply Service as the company progresses its strategy to optimise its existing core business while diversifying into new industries and pursuing new business as an integrated solutions provider,” said AP Moller-Maersk chief executive Søren Skou.
In March, the board of AP Moller-Maersk cancelled its plans to sell Maersk Supply Service, citing weak interest as a result of the current subdued market outlook.
Ms Thygesen will be charged with improving the fortunes of Maersk Supply Service, which implemented a new strategy in August 2018 to diversify its portfolio. It generated about 30% of its revenue from integrated solutions project activity and from offshore wind and ocean cleaning sectors.
Mr Hemmingsen, who joined the company as a shipping trainee in 1981, will leave his post as vice chief executive of AP Moller-Maersk and chief executive of the energy division at the end of June, at which time the energy division will close. He oversaw the spin-off of Maersk Tankers, Maersk Oil and Maersk Drilling from the energy business from AP Moller-Maersk as part of the transformation initiated in 2016.
