Abu Dhabi-based TAQA Energy has awarded a contract to Netherlands-based Jumbo Offshore for an offshore decommissioning project in the Dutch North Sea to remove, transport and dispose of three subsea protection domes and piles.
The removal operation will take place this year and next in the offshore fields in the P15 block 35 km northwest of Hoek van Holland, Dutch North Sea, at water depths of 26-28 m.
This project is part of the emergent North Sea decommissioning programme involving removing older offshore oil and gas infrastructure that has reached the end of its productive service life. UK-based Maritime Strategies International estimates US$3.1Bn will be spent from now until 2028 on decommissioning work in the Dutch North Sea, part of a global market valued at approximately US$78Bn.
To execute the removal, Jumbo will use the heavy lift crane vessel Fairplayer, which has dynamically positioned class two capability, with two 900-tonne capacity Huisman mast cranes and two work-class remotely operated vehicles that can operate in 3,000 m of water. The dual cranes provide tandem heavy lift capacity, dual crane upending capability and deepwater lowering capability.
Fairplayer's main deck has a working area of 3,100 m2 and offers a loading capacity of 12 tonnes/m2. Fairplayer also has an adjustable tween deck with an area of 1,700 m2 and offers a loading capacity of 7 tonnes/m2 and the lower hold area of 1,400 m2 has a loading capacity of 12 tonnes/m2.
Under the contract, Jumbo will recover and transport three subsea protection domes, each with a dry weight of 150 tonnes, as well as removing nine piles. Additionally, the pipelines and umbilicals at each dome will be buried with mattresses.
