French major Total’s Kaombo project offshore Angola has started production, with floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel Kaombo Norte coming on stream.
Kaombo Norte will produce an estimated 115,000 b/d of oil while a second FPSO, Kaombo Sul, which is expected to start production next year, will bring the total production to an estimated 230,000 b/d.
The Kaombo project, which is the deepest offshore development in Angola, is located in Block 32, 260 km offshore Luanda.
The two FPSOs are converted VLCCs and will be connected, via a network of 300 km of subsea pipelines, to 59 wells in six fields across an 800 km2 area in the southern and central parts of Block 32. Kaombo Norte will develop the Gengibre, Gindungo and Caril fields, while its sister vessel will develop the Canela, Mostarda and Louro fields. Associated gas will be exported to the Angola LNG plant.
“Developing the estimated 650M/b of reserves will contribute to the group’s growing production and cashflow in Africa,” said Total’s president of exploration and production Arnaud Breuillac, adding that “Total is proud to build on its deep offshore expertise to operate the latest major project coming on stream in Angola, which will account for 15% of the country’s oil production.”
Total is a 30% operator of the Kaombo project, alongside Songangol P&P, Sonangol Sinopec International, Esso and Galp.
